Luncheonette

A Memoir

Regan Books, February 2005

LUNCHEONETTE is the story of four years in a young man's life -- a young man forced by his father's illness to put his life on hold, and come home to run the family business. From his unlikely post at the luncheonette counter, working side-by-side with Stella the foul-mouthed Polish waitress, Steve would watch his father refuse to accept defeat. Yet for Steve, stuck behind the counter, each one of his father's triumphs was a bitter reminder of the life he'd left behind, as if his father had stolen the spotlight that should have been his own. But ultimately, he would learn the secrets of his father's resilience, and come to realize just how much the small world of the luncheonette had to offer.
